Most men that decide to invest in an electric shaver don’t really know what they should be looking for. Typically they’ll just grab whatever seems to be a reasonable price, which is a play it safe type of buying strategy. This is relatively new technology for this generation. Your father probably taught you how to shave with a disposable razor, so you don’t have any worldly wisdom to go by. I have some advice that I would like to share with you that will help you get a great shaver and not end up spending too much.
Cordless/Self Cleaning
There are very important features that you should get. Cordless is more of a convenience thing for me because I just hate having the cord lying around. I personally like to have the shaver left on the bathroom counter and you really can’t do this when you have a cord lying around. The big benefit you’ll get is from a self cleaner. Any type of shaver you get is going to require some sort of cleaning. For disposable razors you can usually get it clean enough by simply running it through water, but an electric shaver is a lot more complicated.
If you want to clean one of these you have to take it a part and clean out the razors. This isn’t something you need to do daily, but it is required every few weeks. Personally, I don’t want to dedicate 30 minutes of my time to do cleaning. A self cleaner has a simple dock (which also does charging for cordless shavers) that will self clean it. There’s absolutely nothing you have to do and since you should be charging everyday, it will get done.
When it comes to picking up a device with these specific features, I would probably go with a Panasonic electric shaver. They are actually reasonably priced, but provide all the necessary features required to get a great shave.
Foils/Hair Lift Technology
When electric razors first came onto the market they realized they had a pretty big problem. As a person ran the device over their face it would actually push down the hair, making it difficult to cut the hairs. It was really the creation of the foil that changed this. For the most part this feature will be called a foil, but some brands will give it a fancy name like “Hair Lift technology”.
The idea is that the foil catches the hairs and lifts it up for the razor to easily cut. It actually is a pretty simple device to add to a shaver, but not every product on the market has it. You have to make sure the shaver you get has this specific item or you’re going to notice that the shaving experience will be sub-par at best.
The best electric razors on the market are all going to have this. It’s when you start to go too cheap that you end up missing this specific item. I’ve found that if you stick in the price range of $100-$150 you’re going to find a decent balance in your product. Buying the very expensive shavers is a waste because you’re really paying for a brand name and the idea that you’re getting something “premium”. Stick with the simple price range and you’ll end up with a good shaver.
