Handy Travel Tips for Safe Family Car Vacations

Did you know that 65% of car accidents are related to a loss of concentration on the driver’s part?  Those are frightening statistics, but there are ways in which you can reduce the chances of becoming part of those numbers and having an accident this year.  With the rise in American families taking driving vacations in 2011 this is now even more important as there is more traffic on the road, which in turn leads to increased dangers.  Here are a few tips to make sure your family driving vacation is as safe and trouble free as possible.

Prepare for Your Journey in Detail

Before you set off check out Google maps so you have a good idea of any major highways and intersections that you might need to use.  Also try and estimate how long the car journey will take.  Being prepared and not rushing can greatly improve your driving and also mean you don’t increase your chance of panicking when on an unfamiliar road.

Use a GPS Device to Help with Navigation

Millions of people in the US own a Garmin GPS, and if you won’t then its recommended that you buy one.  Many of the newer models now come with Lane Assist meaning the GPS voice will give you plenty of warning and graphically represent what lane you should be in – which again is going to give you plenty of time to adjust your position and reduce the risk of sudden lane changes, which in turn can lead to fatal accidents.

If you do own a Garmin then make sure you check out the cost of Garmin map updates before you go – because having the most up to date information when driving to your holiday destination is imperative.  You don’t want to get lost on any new road developments in a strange city.  It’s worth noting that some people can get Garmin GPS map updates free – but this depends on what offers came with the Nuvi GPS when you purchased it.

Test Oil, Water, and Brakes

Sounds obvious, but you would be amazed at the proportion of drivers who do not know how to do the most basic level of car maintenance – for example checking their water and oil levels before a long car journey.

Even more important are the brakes.  If you are low on brake fluid then you will notice a performance drop in the responsiveness when trying to slow down.  And any sudden braking could be compromised by dangerous low or non-existent brake fluid levels.  Make sure you check this, and if you don’t know how to do it, get a friend or family member to show you how.

There are many other things you could do to improve your safety when driving on your family vacation this year, but the three listed above should give you a good grounding and start point – meaning you have the confidence to drive securely whilst reducing the chances of an accident or fatal loss of concentration.  Don’t become a statistic this year, instead… make sure you enjoy your holiday with the ones you love.
