We prefer to talk about “discount mattresses” than “cheap” mattresses, because it is always better to get a value-for-money product (implying that you get a good price for the quality of item you buy) rather than merely a cheap one (which only considers the price.)
With mattresses we may be expecting to use them eight hours a day for 10 years. That’s an awfully long time to spend next to an item in our homes and represents a much longer period than we would spend in our car, for example, so it’s surprising how many people that would never rush a decision on buying a car will rush the decision on buying a mattress.
The first thing to do when looking for a mattress is to assess your own requirements, even before looking at any mattresses. Do you or your partner suffer from back pain? Do you prefer a luxuriously soft sleeping surface or something a little firmer? Are you happy with a traditional style inner-spring mattress or would you prefer a memory foam or latex-based model? How long do you expect your mattress to last? What is your approximate budget? Do you suffer from any allergies? What size mattress do you want? – maybe you want to upgrade from full size to Queen or King? If so is your room big enough for a larger mattress? Do you need a mattress only or a full bed? Is the mattress going to be used every night or only occasionally?
Above are some of the main questions you will need to ask to assess your own requirements; there are many more. Once you know this type of information then you can begin researching. Combine the information you find online at manufacturers’ web sites with retailers information and some online reviews, with trying some models out at your local bedding store. If you are buying a mattress for your main bedroom then never buy one without trying it out first. There’s nothing to stop you trying it out in the store, then hunting for a better discount price online. If you prefer to buy from a brick and mortar store then another tactic is to talk to the store manager and ask if he can offer a reduction.
